From the mountainous vistas of Wales to California’s sun-drenched coastline, the UK and U.S. offer plenty of natural beauty for those on the road — but it’s hard to focus on the scenery you’re passing through when you’re bursting for the loo. Explore our interactive table below of the motorways and highways in both countries with the biggest average gaps between service stations (or rest stops).

We collected figures on the number of service stations and rest stops situated on UK motorways (total length ≥ 20 miles) and U.S. interstate highways (total length ≥ 150 km) from motorwayservices.uk and interstaterestareas.com, excluding alternative service stations on roads that divert away on to new routes. Using each road’s length, we then calculated the average distance between each service station under the assumption that a driver is travelling in one direction along the full route.
